I originally pitched the idea for this supplement as an excuse to drink for an entire week and call it a work expense. I make no apologies for this; Toronto Beer Week gave me one of the few socially acceptable opportunities to have alcohol for breakfast, and I wasn’t going to refuse. As submissions started to pour in, I realized that this issue was turning out to be more than a paean to my growing alcoholism; people actually care about food.
Maybe I shouldn’t have been that surprised; after all, food and drink are one of the few topics that everyone has firsthand experience with. Good food breaks down borders as often as it expands them; it’s a universal need. Good drink makes friends out of strangers, enemies out of friends and fools out of everyone. I received recipes, reviews and personal anecdotes all based on these two aspects of life. The response was overwhelmingly varied – exactly what I was looking for.
You all deserve more than a small collection of reviews on different restaurants well beyond your price range. In this supplement (which has a French title for that extra dose of bilingual class) you will find articles aimed at you, the starving student.
I didn’t want to write an article explaining the best champagne to pair with beluga caviar, so I made a beginner’s guide to local (and affordable) beers. I’ve had to buy lunch with my OSAP loan, and I once made a sandwich out of Melba toast and Cheez Whiz; I understand the relationship that students have with food.
You’ll find similarly sympathetic articles from the rest of the writers in this supplement. From a breakdown of the restaurants on campus not owned by heartless multinational corporations, to one writer’s journey for the perfect breakfast sandwich, you are sure to find something that actually applies to your life.
So, dig in! I hope that somewhere in this buffet of information, you’ll find something that suits your palate. As you digest these articles, please remember one thing: [WARNING: FOOD METAPHOR LIMIT SURPASSED] Bon appetit!
