The reigning OUA champions Lions field hockey team kicked off the 2019 season with a home game against the McGill Martlets on Sunday. The Lions did not disappoint the home crowd, defeating the Martlets 4-0.

Three of the Lions’ goals were scored in the second period. Rookie midfielder Michelle Lee earned the first goal for the Lions one minute into the second period. Frankie St. Louis would add another goal four minutes later, followed closely by a third goal, this time from forward Marella Greco.

Following a quiet third period, the final goal for the Lions would come from Amira Brar with three minutes to go in the last period to give the Lions a final score of 4-0 over the Martlets.

Lions goalkeeper Serena Vilde earned her first clean sheet finish of the season, largely thanks to the Lions’ defensive effort, which prevented the Martlets from making any shots on net.

The Lions will be travelling to Queen’s next Sunday to once again take on the Martlets, as well as the 2018 OUA silver medallists, the Guelph Gryphons.
