Lancers laid out by Lions

York’s men’s soccer team showed why they should be ranked number one in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport, slaughtering the Lancers 5-0. The 10-degree weather couldn’t keep the Lions down.

The Lions struck early with Badat scoring off an assist from Adrian Pena in the third minute, for his first of three goals. He swiftly moved around defenders and drilled a shot into the back of the net, setting the tone early.

The game got a little rough against the Lancers as two York players—Branko Majstrovic and Calara Trafford—went down with injuries, but both were able to return to the game. Pena got a second assist by a free kick taken that sailed to Badat. Badat headed the ball into the back of the net for the third goal of the game. Pena did not stop at this—he set up another goal in the 63rd minute of the match by passing to Charlie Trafford, who was able to score his second goal of the season. Daniel Alonzi put a point on the scoreboard as well, with an assist from second-year forward Giancarlo Rella.

“It was important that we got on the board early and that we continued pressure,” says head coach Carmine Isacco. “Our defensive play is getting better. We shared the ball today”.

Ultimately the Lions’ dominant play comes down to teamwork.

“As a team we played very well,” says Badat. “I’m very proud of the team, and we played very well. That’s what is most important, not what I scored”.

The team’s next home game is October 21 at 3:15 p.m. vs. Laurier.
