Construction for the subway at York is set to begin at the end of the month, but students should brace themselves for the closing of Ian MacDonald Boulevard.
Christopher Wong, the director of transportation for the York University Development Corporation (YUDC), said the plans for the anticipated York subway are well under way.
“Construction is about to commence in a big way,” says Wong, explaining the machines used to bore out the new subway tunnels, located at the Northwest Gate of the campus, will begin operating towards the end of the summer.
The tunnels, which will be about 20 metres deep, will take about one to two years to build, and will be a part of the “Steeles West Station”.
This will be the first station in Toronto to have an entrance from two municipalities: the city of Vaughan from the north side, and the city of Toronto from the south side.
The station will also have a bus terminal, which will house 12 TTC buses, and is set to replace the bus loop.
The second subway station will be located in the Commons, where preparation for the subway tunnels has already begun.
Construction will continue until about late 2015, when the subway is expected to be complete.
