York President Mamdouh Shoukri recently informed students about the university’s fall 2010 accomplishments, broadcasting his message via a www.yorku.ca video feature.
Shoukri spoke about the opening of the Sherman Health Sciences Research Centre; congratulated the 2,000 students who successfully graduated from York during fall convocation ceremonies; and proudly announced the official opening of the renovated Learning Commons at the Scott Library.
“The Commons is a flexible learning area where students can work individu- ally and collaboratively and have access to a variety of academic supports to enhance their skills in research, writing and learning,” Shoukri said in the video.
“We also celebrated an exciting homecoming with many members of the York community donning the red and white to cheer on our York Lions football team,” he added.
Shoukri went on to applaud the four York professors chosen to join the Royal Society of Canada.
Krisna Saravanamuttu, York Federation of Students (YFS) president, said Shoukri did “a wonderful job in highlighting some of York’s major successes that both the student body and the community has seen in the last semester.”
“Moving forward, I am hoping at the end of winter there will be progress made in the bottle-free campus campaign as well as a new and serious commitment to women-only gym time offered at the Tait McKenzie gym,” Saravanamuttu added.
This coming semester, Shoukri hopes to meet with students one-on-one, via appointments on Feb. 22 and March 21.
