York University’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Support Line (SASSL) held a march on Dec. 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
“The march was held to bring awareness of what is happening to women on and off campus,” said Natasha Dookie, one of the students organizing the march. “It’s a national day for women and men against violence.”
This is the second year a march of this kind took place on campus. Approximately 50 people participated.
Dookie emphasized that many people and on-campus groups, such as the York Federation of Students (YFS), expressed strong interest in the cause.
“There were men talking to men, […] to prevent violence against women,” said the fourth-year psychology and women’s studies major, noting many participants engaged in active discussions.
The march also marks the anniversary of the 1989 l’E?cole Polytechnique massacre, in which 14 female students were killed by a male assailant who specifically targeted young women.
“The objective of the march was not to be a fundraiser,” she said. “It was more to raise awareness for what happened on Dec. 6.”
