Fashion on Campus

The best thing about a beautiful autumn day on campus is that it’s the perfect chance to not wear bundles of clothing and layers.
It’s the opportunity to go from class to class without a huge, heavy sweater or jacket.
It’s also the perfect opportunity for me to scope out some of our remarkably well-dressed York University students.
My first encounter came in the form of a quirky yet impeccably fashionable first-year casually strolling towards Vanier. I was impressed with her outfit and had to know where she got those pants from!

Name: Phoebe Todd-Parrish
Year & major: first year visual arts
Outfit: pants, scarf, belt all vintage; shirt from Urban Outfitters; bag stolen from sister
Her style philosophy: “It’s more fun to shop vintage because then you can be creative!”
And creative she is indeed.
With my eye still on my peer’s fashion choices, I came upon a few students hanging outside of Vari Hall. One of them really caught my eye.

Name: Alex Maleyeff
Year & major: third year music
Outfit: jeans from Cheap Monday, shirt from American Apparel, shoes from Zara, bag and sweater from counterfeit stores in Beijing
His style philosophy: “I like necky, drapey things…and yeah.”
Necky and drapey seem like two perfect words to describe the ongoing fashion trends on campus, because right after I spoke with Alex I noticed four different people wearing drapey sweaters. Unlike him, though, they probably did not have the advantage of getting their sweaters in Beijing from counterfeit stores.
As the sun was setting over campus and the wind began to pick up, I noticed a bright red sweater and incredibly understated white sneakers. I introduced myself to a fourth-year student with a taste for crisp and clean fashion.

Name: Lesean Harris
Year & major: fourth year film production
Outfit: jeans from Armani Exchange, shirt from Heritage, sweater from American Apparel, denim jacket from American Eagle, shoes from Common Projects
His style philosophy: “I like to feel laid back, comfortable and let my clothes do the talking.”
That was exactly the impression I received from Lesean: laid back, comfortable and friendly. It’s exciting to see where people get their creative boost when it comes to dressing in the morning for class. If only the days could stay as beautiful as this so we don’t have to go back to wool sweaters and boots.
If only.
