Is this the month of sweatpants and hoodies?

With the final days of the semester upon us, many students feel mentally and physically drained.

It is getting more difficult to channel what little amount of motivation we have left for school work. The end of the term seems so close, yet it also seems so far away. During this stressful time, the effort we used to put into our physical appearances goes out the window, for some of us at least.

pants We are brain dead. We are tired. We reach for the easiest, most practical outfit we have. December is the inevitable “month of the sweatpants and hoodies.” Let’s face it, when the only thing that occupies our minds is getting a decent grade, we tend to put less importance into looking good. We just want to be comfortable, which is where sweatpants come in handy.

Yet I can’t help but notice that other people, who continue to dress up like they are preparing for a night out on the town, look down on those of us who are simply too tired to care. They glare at us with disgust and contempt. How dare we show up to class looking like we just rolled out of bed. Have we no shame? Have we given up on ourselves completely? Have we lost our minds?

“The answer is no. No we have not.”

Honestly, we are just really exhausted and don’t give a shit about looking good. We aren’t here to look sexy; we aren’t here to make friends. We are here to get a decent education, earn our degrees, and get out of here.

Since we care less about our appearances, I would argue that we are spending more time on studying for exams, catching up on readings, and sleeping. This all equates to better grades for us. In this case, maybe the joke is on you.

I just can’t get over those dirty looks we get from these elegantly-dressed students, and even professors. I mean, thinking about it logically, we are dressed this way because we have been studying non-stop for several days. Shouldn’t professors be pleased that we are clearly placing more importance on school work, rather than on our outfit selection? When all is said and done, that’s really why we’re all here, isn’t it? I am personally not looking to win the prize for “York’s best dressed student.”

To the well-dressed student, do you really think we are jealous of you, attempting to walk around in your tight-fitting jeans and high heels?

No way. We are actually super comfortable and don’t give a fuck. Why don’t you stop focusing on us and focus on yourselves for a change. We are all really impressed that you still seem to put so much effort into your clothing choices, because clearly we can’t. So why don’t you accept that we are not you?

We don’t care how we look. School is our main concern. Maybe it should be yours too. And if you are one of those people that can continue to deck yourself out while continuing to be a perfect A+ student, then more power to you. I applaud you. However, keep your dirty looks to yourself, please and thank-you.

The next time you see a mentally drained student sporting an over-sized sweatshirt, Lululemons, and salt-stained Uggs, treat her like a human being. At the end of the day, you should be focusing on yourself, and not on my sweat pants.
