The men’s volleyball team was on the road in southern Ontario this weekend, taking on the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs.
On Saturday, the men were looking to end their two-game losing streak on Friday against the Lancers. It wasn’t a great start for York in the first set, as Windsor jumped out to a 14-7 lead en route to the 25-15 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle, as neither team could pull away. Unfortunately for the Lions, it was Windsor who took the set 25-23.
Down two sets to none, things weren’t looking good for York. However, they came out strong in the third, and jumped out to a 20-13 lead, but Windsor refused to give up, and cut the lead to four points.
The Lions survived the late surge from Windsor, and took the set 25-22, which guaranteed at least one more.
The fourth was another nail-biter, as both teams traded points en route to a 24-24 tie. This time, however, it was the Lions who got the win, forcing a fifth and final set to decide the game.
Like the sets that preceded it, the fifth was more of the same, as each team matched their opponent point for point en route to a 10-10 tie. However, the Lions closed the set on a 5-2 run, and escaped with a 3-2 victory.
On Sunday, the Lions were hoping to extend their winning streak against the Western Mustangs. Just like they did the day before, the Lions dropped the first two sets 27-25 and 25-19. York won the third set, extending the game for at least one more. Unfortunately, that was as far as the comeback would go, as Western won the fourth 25-18.
Despite their slow start to 2018, the Lions are tied with Ryerson for first in the OUA East.
The women lost both of their games this week but are still in third place, just four points behind Toronto and Queen’s, who are both tied for second.
The men have the weekend off, as they return to action against the Brock Badgers on February 9 at 8 p.m., while the women are back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Thunder Bay, against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
