The definition of a “healthy person” can differ from person to person. For some it means appearing healthy, for others it is about having a healthy mind. Though it has become a significant topic over the years in university life, many overlook health. Illnesses and issues such as obesity, anxiety, depression, and other mental and physical disorders have become increasingly common in adolescents and studies are now examining why this age group is experiencing such health concerns.

“A healthy mind is one that acknowledges presence of both negative and positive emotions in their selves and in others as normal,” says Dr. Mitra Montazeri, scientific advisor and psychotherapist. “A healthy mind is one that accepts the things they cannot change and focuses on what can be changed.”

There is an ongoing debate whether or not a healthy mind can be achieved by effort, or if it varies according to each situation. There is also a debate regarding how a healthy person deals with conflict, and whether they are able to cope with issues through examining with detail or observing the issue through a bigger and general perspective.

“In terms of maintaining a healthy mental state perspective is extremely important,” says Dr. Montazeri. “It is one’s perspective that determines how he or she views the challenges and adversities. Are they viewed as positive opportunities for growth and understanding? Are they considered a normal part of life and something that everyone has to deal with in one form or another? Or do those challenges create a sense of being cursed and helplessness in them? It is all a matter of how one views life.”

Exercise is essential to maintaining a healthy body, however it is also significant when making an effort to maintain a healthy mind. When performing exercise, the body releases endorphins, which have been proven to release stress and prevent depression.

“Physical health brings with it mental health,” says Dr. Montazeri. “Maintaining a healthy body helps to maintain a positive mental state. Studies have shown that physical exercise alleviates depression and alters the neurotransmitters in the brain which allows people to enjoy their life.”

But being healthy is about more than just the body or the mind alone. It’s about balancing and nurturing both organs.
